Egypt, Iran and China are the most dangerous places to blog about political life, accounting for more than half of all arrests since blogging became big. The report separates the reason for arrests into six categories: violation of cultural norms, blogging involved with social protest, blogging about public policy, blogging about political figures, exposing corruption or human rights violations, and finally “other.” In addition to Iran, Egypt and China, Middle Eastern regimes in Syria and Saudi Arabia, and South East Asian nations such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand also figure in the report.
In my opinion Singapore has the worst freedom of speech, press or whatnot. A Filipino newscaster who is based in Singapore said that it’s hard to gather news in Singapore, because only the best and clean news must be shown to the public. Anyone who said something against the government will be punished. Here’s an excerpt regarding Singapore’s bad reputation of freedom of the press.
Singapore has slipped from 140th position to 146th position this year. This ranking has been prepared by Reporters Without Borders. RSF has even prepared an Asian overview of some countries of which it had mentioned Singapore.
Singapore government uses around a score of draconian laws, particularly those on the granting of licences for publications, on films, religious and political website managers and on national security, to stifle any criticism.
